Custom instructions

Custom instructions let you set your preferred tone, structure, and constraints so outputs are more consistent across runs.

How do I set custom instructions?

1. Open a Google Doc and launch AI for Docs.
2. In the sidebar, open the Custom tab.
3. Fill in Global Instruction and optionally Docs Instruction.
4. Click Save.

What is the difference between Global and Docs instructions?

• Global Instruction applies to your account across documents.
• Docs Instruction applies only to the current Google Doc.

Examples you can copy

Tone: clear and professional.
Use short paragraphs.
Include a "Key takeaways" section at the end.

For this doc only:
- Keep output under 700 words
- Use a table for comparisons
- Add 5 FAQs

Why can I not save?

Custom instructions are available on the Pro plan. If you are on Free, you will see an error when you click Save. Upgrade from the Billing and upgrades guide.
