Is there a free tier?
Yes. The Free plan includes a monthly credit allowance.
How do credits work?
Each run costs credits based on which options you enable (web search, deep research, and image generation). See Credits and usage limits.
How do I upgrade to Pro?
Open the add-on in Google Docs, then open the Account tab and click Subscribe. See Billing and upgrades.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. You can cancel anytime from the Stripe customer portal.

Using AI for Docs
Do I need an API key?
No. AI for Docs works without you bringing your own API key.
Does it insert content into my Google Doc?
Yes. AI for Docs can write into your document with headings, bullet lists, numbered steps, tables, and a citations section.
Where does the output get inserted?
AI for Docs appends the generated content to the end of your document. Scroll to the bottom after you run.
Where do citations appear?
Citations are appended under a “Citations” section in the inserted content. Learn more in How citations work.
How do I set custom instructions?
Open the Custom tab in the sidebar and save your global or doc-specific instructions. This feature is available on Pro. See Custom instructions.
How do I generate images?
In the Writer sidebar, turn on Generate Images before running. See Generate images in your document.
Troubleshooting
AI for Docs is not showing in the Extensions menu. What do I do?
Confirm the add-on is installed, refresh the Google Docs tab, and make sure you are signed into the same Google account that installed it. See Getting started.
The Run button is disabled or says Insufficient credits. How do I fix it?
Turn off expensive options (Deep research or Generate Images), or upgrade your plan. The Writer sidebar shows the next run cost. See Credits and usage limits.
The Subscribe button is stuck on loading. How do I fix it?
Allow pop-ups from https://docs.google.com so Stripe checkout can open. See Allow pop-ups for payments.
I have multiple Google accounts signed in. Can that affect billing?
Yes. Try signing out of other accounts, then retry using the account you used for the subscription.
