Generate images in your document

When Generate Images is enabled, AI for Docs creates images and inserts them into your Google Doc along with the written content.

What gets inserted?

  • A thumbnail-style image near the top of the inserted draft.
  • Section images for some H2 headings in longer drafts.

How do I enable it?

  1. Open the Writer sidebar.
  2. Turn on Generate Images.
  3. Enter your prompt and click Run.

How do I guide the image style?

Add style guidance directly in your prompt, or set it in Custom instructions. For example:

Write an SEO blog post about "<topic>".
Generate images in a clean flat illustration style with simple colors.

Costs and speed

Image generation uses more credits and can take longer than text-only runs. The Writer sidebar shows the exact credit cost before you run. See Credits and usage limits.

If images are missing

  • Confirm Generate Images is enabled before you run.
  • Check you have enough credits for the run cost.
  • Try again with a shorter prompt, or generate text first and images second.
